June has a twenty year career as a fine artist. Previous work experience included teaching elementary art education, scientific illustration and many years spent in graphic design.

Recently she has switched subject matter from landscape painting  (see archived work) to abstracted design based painting that has its roots in conceptual, pattern and decorative genres.

Artist Statement

Recently I have been exploring a way of painting that has challenged me in a number of ways.  I am often working abstractly and no longer looking at a  photo or a real life setting for my inspiration. It is more the memory of places and experiences that inspire my work.  Now work begins with a variety of mark making on the surface of the wood panel or canvas.   I add layers of paint, working to add  form and structure.  Sometimes I use stencils that I hand cut, or a collage element.  I will sand the surface to allow the under layers to show through.  I continue the painting until I begin to see a direction.
The painting with its color, form and composition  becomes a problem that must be solved.  I strive to make art that is new and hopefully crosses into unexplored visual territory.
